HUD Announces Additional Funding for Homeless Programs in Mississippi

Earlier today, Secretary Julián Castro announced $355 million to more than 1,200 local homeless housing and service programs across the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This funding includes $725,424 to support 7 local homeless housing and service programs in Mississippi. These Continuum of Care (CoC) grants support the Obama Administration’s efforts to end homelessness and build upon the $1.6 billion in funding HUD awarded through a first round of funding in March.

PRESS RELEASE: State Homeless Agencies Plan Annual Homeless Census 2016

The Mississippi Balance of State CoC (BoS), a group whose membership includes the majority of homeless service providers in Mississippi, plans to conduct a homeless census – also known as a Point in Time Count (PIT) - on January 25-29, 2016. The BoS’s target area includes all of the state, excluding the Jackson Urbanized area and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

HUD Reports Homelessness Continues to Decline Nationally

U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Julián Castro today announced HUD’s latest national one-night estimate of homelessness, highlighting a continuing decline across the nation. The results are based on HUD’s Point-in-Time (PIT) estimates, which seek to measure the scope of homelessness on a single night in January each year. HUD’s 2015 Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR) to Congress found that there has been an overall 11% decrease and 26% drop in the unsheltered homeless population since 2010, when President Obama launched Opening Doors, the nation’s first-ever comprehensive strategy to prevent and end homelessness.

NOW AVAILABLE: 2016-17 CoC Application

MS Balance of State CoC is accepting applications for the 2016-2017 Continuum of Care funding cycle. It is estimated that $3,226,170 will be available for funding both reallocated and renewal projects. This funding will renew/fund projects that have end dates in 2016 and continue through 2017. Both renewals and reallocated projects must complete the application. The application deadline is Monday, October 19, 2015.
